TIME FOR REFLECTION

We have an issue within the Rider Nation.   It's not a problem ... yet.   But it definitely is an issue.

Just about anybody connected with the Saskatchewan Roughriders -- be it employees, players or fans -- have been astounded by the coverage devoted to the incidents which occurred on Ron Lancaster Night at Mosaic Stadium last Saturday.

I've certainly been outspoken with regards to the reasons behind Rider fans pelting the B.C. Lions' bench with beer cans and debris and there's been plenty of opposition to my views.  But we can all agree on one thing; that display was utterly unacceptable.

I brought to light the catalyst for the melee, the Lions' antagonism of the crowd by launching a football into the stands after a fumble recovery, for one precise reason.  It's because of comments like the one from Sportsnet's Jim Lange in his weekly CFL power rankings at www.sportsnet.ca:

"In honour of the sad passing of the legendary "Little General" – Ron Lancaster – the Riders wore their vintage throwback jerseys Saturday night. With the spirit of Ron Lancaster smiling down on Mosaic Stadium in this one, I really thought the Riders were going to find a way to win.  I am thinking Lancaster would have been more than a little disgusted to see Rider fans pelting the Lions bench with beer cans and garbage in the third quarter after a disputed call by the officials. I always thought Rider fans had way more class than that."

That was like a dagger through the heart for anyone who passionately follows the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and admires the love our fans have for the team.   I maintain this incident wouldn't have occurred if not for the Lions' actions, but the national media has the wrong idea about what went on, as evidenced by Jim's writings.  By the way, Jim Lange is a former Voice of the Argonauts and he and I have discussed at length the magic of Rider games at Mosaic Stadium.  I respect him greatly.

Rest assured Roughrider staffers have spent the majority of the week trying to sort out the mess, and deciding which direction to go from here.  Should they ban the sale of beer in cans?  This policy was instituted for two reasons; one, to turn back proceeds from recycling back into the community and two, to vastly speed up the process of serving thirsty patrons.  I know for a fact Molson has doubled its sales the past two seasons because of this method and it would be difficult to go back.

Pouring drinks from a keg is impossible.  You may say that NHL and MLB teams can do it, so why can't we?  Well that's because those teams play every second day or in baseball's case, everyday.   In the CFL, we have home games once every two weeks and once a keg is tapped, it can't sit idle for two weeks or else it'll spoil.

However this isn't the issue to which I'm referring.

To put it bluntly, the east side stands at Mosaic Stadium are rank.  Some have said to me this week "it's not that bad over there".   But when I counter with, "would you take your kid to sit over there?", they look at you wide-eyed and say "not a chance".

The Riders would be disappointed to think that their games aren't family-friendly.  However it's clear that to a lot of citizens of the Rider Nation, their obsession over the home team blinds them to the point they don't know right from wrong.  As Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco said this week, people get caught up in the emotion of sporting events and sometimes get carried away.

This is not however, indigenous to us.  My good friend, U of R Rams coach Frank McCrystal, said the only time he's feared for his life at a sporting event was in The Black Hole, home of the Oakland Raiders.   Regina Pats owner Russ Parker said the same thing about a trip to the outfield bleachers at Yankee Stadium.   Winnipeg Sun writer Paul Friesen wrote years ago that the New York Yankees send their fans to Taylor Field for training!

This fact is inescapable; Mosaic Stadium is an intimidating place for visiting CFL teams and that'll never change.  However the Riders are poised to play before their fifteenth consecutive sellout next Friday when they host the Calgary Stampeders.   A good portion of that crowd will be the new generation of Rider Priders, the twenty-somethings, whom I'm told were the ones launching beer cans at the Lions.  The Riders' marketing efforts to attract a younger fanbase have worked perfectly, but with that comes some of these problems.

The Roughriders will eventually come up with the correct methods of beer sales and security but if I may, I'd like to pose a suggestion...

Team President Jim Hopson came up with this idea first and I'd like to second the motion.  If anyone is seen or caught throwing anything onto the field, they should be subject to removal from the stadium and subsequently be barred for life.   This can be done, as the culprits who terrorized the Paul McCallum family in 2004 have incurred the same punishment.

What better way to punish these people than by denying them the opportunity to watch their beloved football team?   It would take a concerted effort by Rider fans to help identify these people, but it would be worth it.

Now having said all of this, I received an email from a family from Newfoundland who attended their very first CFL game Saturday night.  They were stupified by the splendor of all the good things we have going on at Rider games.   They were blown away by all that's right with going to Mosaic Stadium to watch Canada's Team.

All has not been lost, however the wonderful reputation of the Rider Nation took a serious blow on the weekend.  We must also remember that although the Riders have the "World's Best Fans", that doesn't empower you to denigrate anything that's anti-Rider.  There's room in the CFL, and Mosaic Stadium, for fans of all teams and you shouldn't be afraid for your personal safety if you happen to be wearing black and orange in Regina.  Or green and gold, or red and white, etc.

Let's get it right, and keep it that way.

All great ideas Rod!

Here's one more:
- let's get security and cops in the stadium who are actually going to do their job! The security that was in place for last week's game were there to watch the game for free! They saw who was tossing the beer cans - they chose to ignore it. The onus should NOT be on us fans to rat out the bad ones. Security is there to do a job - SO DO IT!

That was all well said except one point. I have been a season ticket holder with my family since 1975(I was 9 years old)all on the "East" side.I have met great people over the years all on the East side. Until Saturday I can't remember anything happening like that before. It's fuuny before the game I said to my sister why do we continue to play games at 8 on a Saturday night. You give people all day to drink before the game. For some strang reason I guess I saw this coming. Would I take my kids to a game and sit on the East side? You bet I would and have so on many occasions already. My daughter is 9 and my son 3 and my daughter just loves it. My kids have been treated great by everyone around us. Last point a couple of years ago I sat on the west for a Labour Day classic,I couldn't beleive this was the same stadium. It was like a church, very quite and nothing but old people sitting on their hands.

first rider game I have been to since I lived in Regina as a kid growing up. I was totally dismayed by the fans throwing beer cans at the BC Lions. I was seating in the East side and watched it happen in horror. I think anyone caught throwing anyhting on the filed should be barred for life! I was embarrased to be a rider fan!
from alan vogt on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 01:28:59 PM

Nobody should be embarassed to be a Rider fan. We're just passionate about football. We have nothing else to cheer for, and it shows!!! So what if a few fans threw beer at some players? Big deal! It was one isolated incident! Let's not turn it into a larger issue then what it should be. Think about it... two years ago when the Edmonton Oilers ALMOST won the cup, we had riots on Whyte Ave...multiple riots consisting of riot police, tear gas, looting, injuries, assaults, smashed storefront windows...the whole deal. Kind of puts the beer can throwing into perspective, doesn't it? I don't recall hearing about a riot in Regina after the Grey Cup win. Raise your heads Rider fans. You are still a class act and the best fans in the world.

Hi
I think the riders have two options. Pour the beer from the cans or bottles into plastic cups or cut the sale of beers if they want to restore the family atmosphere.
from Kevin Mcloughlin on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 03:05:36 PM

Buy the refs some glasses so they
aren't so blind and then when BC cheats with a face masking, and then rubs it is in the Rider fans face, they won't have to reach the boiling point and over react...

Hi Rod!

I am not condoning the Beer Can throwing at all, but did several dozen fans decide to throw beer cans at the exact same time? My sources tell me that the BC player did not lob the ball into the crowd, but threw it hard! He could easily have injured someone himself. But, we don't hear anything about that on the Toronto Sports Network!

My family has made a pilgramage at least twice a summer to Taylor Field - sitting on the East or West side - best seats we can get. We drove for 60 hours this summer to get to Rider games. My daughter was two at her first Rider game - my son 3 - and both were on the East side. I've seen much worse in Commonwealth - but I've also seen security deal with the problem promptly. This is the real issue - not the quality of fans the Riders have!

Hi Sampson...
With regards to security, most of the guys and gals on the sidelines have very little training...most are part time. If I was working there (and I almost took a job there a few summers ago) I would probably be turning around and watching the action too!
from Buck on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 04:42:58 PM

I can vouch for Lori's comment...Section "O" at Commonwealth is the worst place I have watched a game at. I was sitting in Row 1, and several times, the "fans" would throw water and/or beer filled condoms over our heads! And when the Police did go into the crowd to pull out the "fans", they were called "F---in' Pigs" by these scumbags!

Rod, as one of the 20 something's that was at the game on Sat night I took offense to your clumping all the idiots who threw cans into my age group. I was sitting across the aisle from a man in his 40's who had been swearing and screaming all game and who then proceeded to throw cans at the Lions bench. I also then clapped when someone who sits near me kicked him out. Most of my friends who attend games are nothing but respectful and were filled with as much anger over the incident on Sat as I was. I am just saying that you should be careful when accusing those who did the throwing because you don't want to turn this into an age debate. Do NOT try to lump my generation into the bad guys in this situation. Also I currently have season tickets on the East side that have been in my family for 40 some years (first my grandparents, now my father and I). I love sitting over there and wouldn't move for a million dollars. Rider fans are the best and I'm sure the Rider Nation will figure out how to handle this best.

Why not sell the beer in cans. but if you want to take it in to the stands, than you have to visit the friendly recycling station and pour it into a cup. before you proceed. Problem solved and beer sales do not slow down. Lions Fan

Part of life is the east side. I have taken my daughters to the east side since they were 8 years old. We have been through snow, rain, wind, sleet, no lights on more than one occasion including the last. We take part in cheering against the opposition but do not drink or throw. At no time have I ever felt that we were in danger. Drunks and vulgar language are always present but this is life. We always have been treated with respect from Gainer coming over and having his picture taken with the girls to the same drunks being the first to offer them a yellow football tossed into the crowd. Now that they are older (and always dressed in rider garb) the fans ask to have pictures taken with them and are always polite. They were once the 13th man and returned to the section to a standing ovation. Yes they are loud, proud, some drunk, sometimes carried away, but we have always been treated like family. Sure the odd beer gets spilled (more from fans moving to their seats through the narrow walkways) but this is the east side. We were there during last years black out and never felt endangered. We moved under the stands where is was loud but surprisingly controlled. The police seemed more nervous and since we were quietly standing by they told us that the game was over and leave. We did even though we could not see any security threat or panic. Yes it was loud but go riders go hardly seems to me out of place during a rain delay. Yes there was beer but people were controlled. There is far more danger driving back to Saskatoon after the game than at any moment on the east side. Please do not promote ejections. Something will be lost from the CFL. I will not support a stadium so politically correct that piped in cheering is needed due to the ejection of the spontaneous, entertaining fans.

There have been some good points made here by fans. I as well was appalled by the behaviour of a few probably drunk fans of whatever age. I can understand the frustration and believe this was more than likely started by the really bad call by the refs. Of course rider fans should be used to all the bad calls against us as if it is not bad enough with all of our injuries but it seems like the refs always have it in for us for some odd reason, and I too was really ticked off with the refs calls as well. Maybe they should start with training the refs with fair game playing calls 101. Of course mistakes will be made as that is a gimmie but when obvious calls should be called they are not unless its against the riders. That was going to far though with the fans that participated in throwing beer cans etc. They were probably upset over the calls as well and adding beer to that made for some bad behaviour. I went to a game at commonwealth for the first time as a birthday gift from my daughter and was quite excited except it turned very sour due to the edmonton fans that were all around us. I have never encountered such rude, disgusting and ignorant fans in my life. They were all ages. Oh and yes they also threw beer etc. and many were very drunk but the security were more intent on removing the younger male rider fans that were doing nothing but cheering on their team. I also have seen this at many calgary games as well. We live in calgary. Oh yes and on the bus ride back to the parking lot we were the only rider fans on the bus and I was shocked by the ignorant comments thrown at us. We refused to get into a insult throwing situation with these so called fans as there were many children on the bus and what kind of example would that set. So I don't agree with bad behaviour but maybe we should look at the whole picture. And what happened to the lions player that threw the football at the fans. Not good behaviour either hey wally. I do wonder though why any fans go to a game and get drunk. The whole idea to me of going to a game is to support your team and cheer them on not to go and get so drunk that you can't even stand up and you leave your seat more times than not to get even more beer. I have a great solution for those fans. Hey you can stay home and get as drunk as you like and make a fool of yourself all in the comfort of your own home.Just my 2 cents.

My friend KEN INCH and I bought Season Tickets in then ew West Side in 1947. Ken kept his seat untill a few years ago. In the 40's and 50's drinking was frowned upon at the Games and Uniformed Police could and would issue fines. The current Rider Management was at fault for selling beer in cans. Only an idiot would not reconize the potential danger. Two years ago an employee at the Atadium told me ".. management wants to sell beer in cans because it is more rofitable". This person had already seen a Cheerleader get hit with a beer can. Mothing was done. Management inaction seems to have condoned the "idiot behavior".
Now management should show some leadership.

two comments:
1) without a quarterback the riders won't win another game this year and what's up with the offense- two one yard line stands- the offensive play caller should be sacked.
2)why didn't someone go out and find some new recievers? the team is beginning to stink, even the offense is shutting down.

A word to Ross Carrier (in Calgary?) and "hopeless in sask.". I have been a Rider Fan for over 60 years. Some times I feel like I have seen it all. Good and bad. For you disheartened fans let me offer this advice - it is OK to bleed for the Team but not to quit on them.We used to have Quarterback Club meetings at The Grand Theater on 11th Avenue in Regina back in the mid to late 40's and 50's. Speakers like big Toar Springstein, lineman, and little Tommy Douglas, premier, would encourage everyone to keep beleiving in the GREEN AND WHITE. Even after losing the Grey Cup game in 1951(?) we managed to stay posetive. Fifty years ago - or thereabouts - was when the BC Lions petitioned the CFL to have the Riders dropped from the Western Conference because they didn't like sharing the proceeds from their gate receipts with a team that didn't have home crowds as large as the Lions did. The Riders couldn't cut it in the Vancouver scheme of things. But the League persisted and so did the Riders - so don't you people quit on them. To many Fans the Rider Players and Coaches are Family first and footballers second. That's what The Rider Nation is all about, and that is also why so many Fans were so hurt and ashamed of the beercan tossing incident but ....we are not prone to giving-up on the Team. A couple of other points, our first objective is to make it to the Playoffs, the second is to be in First Place, and the third is to be in the Grey Cup - and WIN.So far everything is yet acheivable. So, keep the faith. Don't quit on THIS TEAM because they certainly haven't. And as far as all the broken legs go, I for one do not beleive they could all be "accidents" especially the ones that happened against BC - the one on Brendon Lynch looked like a blow delivered by a Lions' knee a review of the others may be similar. During the last game in BC I was really ticked at the TSN colour guy working the sidelines who found it comical that at least half of the Riders' broken legs "happened right here in BC Place against the Lions". No, don't get down on our team, they have enough people out there who are working against them. Maybe in years passed we had more 'locals" playing, like Roy Wright, Big John Bell, Pete Martin, Art McEwen, Tony Hungle, Sully Glasser,Wayne Pine, The Shaw Brothers (from Craik?), Ron Atchison (Davidson?), and I beleive Dean Bandiera and Toar Springstein were also local guys. I know there are dozens more from around the Province and I apologize for leaving out some like Gord Sturtridge and Doug Killo and many others. But we still have many more on the current team and on the current Alumni who I am sure still atend the games. So don't quit on them. Better days are yet to come.
from Ed Thompson on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 03:35:38 PM

As for the east side stands being "rank":
I've sat on the east side for a number of years and I wouldn't have a problem bringing children to sit where I sit. It may be that portions of the east side are rowdier than others, but I think it's a gross generalization to say the entire east side stands are "rank". While I completely agree the behaviour of a few individuals is completely unacceptable, don't let the behaviour of a few represent the thousands that sit on the east side.

I plan on driving to Calgary for the Thanksgiving Day tilt with the Stamps. I don't know what might happen this weeken in Regina BUT the scenario is very exciting (especially for us long time Rider Fans) because it is shaping-up to be the Rider version of the "PERFECT STORM". Other old-timers may also remember back to the days of the 2-game total point playoffs. On one occassion Calgary came to Regina and cobberred us by about 40 points advantage - the following weekend we went into Calgary and took the series. Talk about being on a high. As I see it from here on the West Coast I feel I have bought into the most exciting Rider opportunity yet and it is going to be a fun drive from Victoria to Calgary and Back. Even the weather is predicted to co-operate. It should be great opportunity for some of the "injury replacement" rookies to show off their stuff and surprise the Stamps with two Calgary losses. I beleive that it is acheivable and will be spendig two days on the road to cheer the Riders on. When I made the decision to be at the Calgary game on october 13th and asked my son to get me tickets I didn't know that the Riders would be in this position - again. Perfect. Do I beleive in history repeating itself? Oh yes. It may not be the play-offs but it is back-to-back games.

I have sat on the East side for many years and have taken children to sit with me. To say that an entire side of a stadium is out of control because of 30 drunk people at a late Saturday night game is unfair. I have met many respectable fans that are just as civilized as the West side fans. Maybe you should go and sit on the East for a couple of games. The sunshine is fantastic.

Those of little faith. This is in response to ross carrier and hopeless in Sask. Seeing you don;t want to cheer on our riders and you live in Sask, hey why don't you move to another province, they would love you in edmonton as when their team is down they love to boo them, so you would fit right in. As with so many of the other cfl teams. And to ross carrier I'll tell you what is more sickening is reading what you wrote now that is sickening. You are not a true rider fan and never will be either of you. Obviously neither of you seem to realize we are the only team in the cfl with not only so many of the injuries but many major injuries. Hats off to all the riders who are giving it their all. Oh and in case you need strong glasses we do have qb's and they are great, no player is perfect as we all make mistakes. We live in calgary and are true rider fans always no matter what, more so than what either of you are. A true rider fan cheers on their team through the good and the bad. Maybe you should take up watching another sport like golf perhaps because you don't know what football is all about(nothing against golf but you would only be ticked off at one player not a whole team). I wouldn't bet with you either because you would lose big time as I do have faith in the green and white and we not only will go on to the grey cup but we are bringing that one home again. Go riders go. We will be at the Oct 13th game cheering on our team along with hundreds of other true rider fans. Riders in cowtown.

These comments are in regards to Ross Carrier and hopeless in sask. First off, if you two actually were Rider fans I might be offended by your comments, but since your not, let me share with you what it's like to be one! Being a true Rider fan is not something you can turn on and off. It's in you or it's not, and believe me, you two, it's not! A true Rider fan is a lifer. Wagon jumping is not in the Saskatchewan dictionary. Sure we get frustrated. We may even say things like, "I am done with this team!", but the very next game we'll be back in the stands, in our paint and gear. All of us! The Great Gazoo, Barrel Man, Spikey Hard Hat Finger Pointing Dude, and even Elvis! We may turn the tv or the radio off after a frustrating play, go for a lap around the kitchen and rant to our wives about how choked we are at the boys but then before the next snap we're already turning it back on talking to the screen as if we're on the side lines pumping up the troops feeling sorry that for even those 30 seconds we turned our backs on them. It goes so much deeper than games and wins or loses. It represence who we are in Saskatchewan. Hard working, underdogs. Little engins that could. Take a lickin one day, pick up our pride, dust it off, and go back at it the next day! When you say or play against the Riders you have more than a team to deal with, YOU HAVE US! ALL OF US! A PROVINCE, A NATION! RIDER NATION! There are few things in this life that I am pridefull about. But the things Iam, I REALLY AM! My family, my country, my province, and MY RIDERS!
