HONOURS: During Grey Cup Week in 2023, Lauther received the prestigious Tom Pate Memorial Award, which is presented on an annual basis to a member of the CFL Players’ Association who demonstrates supreme sportsmanship and exemplary contributions to his team and community. He became the seventh Roughrider to win that award, following George Reed (1976), Ron Lancaster (1977), Ken McEachern (1981), Jerry Friesen (1985), Richie Hall (1990) and Jeremy O’Day (2008). Also in 2023, Lauther received an honorary degree in Applied Studies from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Moose Jaw Campus.

2023: Lauther made 36 of 44 field-goal attempts (81.8 per cent) and 27 of 29 converts. On Aug. 6, his 54-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Roughriders a 26-24 victory over the visiting Ottawa REDBLACKS. On Sept. 3, his 18-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter created a 24-24 tie and forced overtime against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Mosaic Stadium. The Roughriders ended up winning 32-30. Earlier in that game, Lauther had connected on a 53-yard field goal — one of 16 three-pointers of 50 or more yards he has made since becoming the Roughriders’ full-time placekicker in 2018. In terms of 50-plus-yarders, Lauther is third on the Roughriders’ All-Time list, behind Canadian Football Hall of Famers Dave Ridgway (32) and Paul McCallum (28). Following the 2023 season, Lauther was third All-Time on the Roughriders in field goals (203), behind Ridgway (574) and McCallum (368), and was the team’s career leader in field-goal percentage (83.9), taking into consideration all kickers with at least 100 attempts. Since joining the Roughriders full-time in 2018, Lauther has delivered all 11 times that a go-ahead/tying field goal or 32-yard convert has been required in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime. Entering the 2024 season, Lauther was fifth on the Roughriders’ career list in points scored (755), behind Ridgway (2,374), McCallum (1,615), Jack Abendschan (863) and George Reed (823).

PRO: Lauther was selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the seventh round, 53rd overall, of the 2013 CFL Draft. In four games with the Tiger-Cats in 2013, Lauther made six of 10 field-goal attempts and 10 of 10 converts. As a non-roster player, he was on the sideline for the Tiger-Cats for the 2013 Grey Cup Game, won 45-23 by the hos Roughriders. Following the 2013 season, Lauther had several CFL stops (including practice-roster stints with Saskatchewan in 2015 and 2017) before signing with the Roughriders for a third time, on March 19, 2018. That year, he quickly established himself as a premier placekicker, making 54 of 60 field-goal attempts and being named a West Division All-Star. His 90.0-per-cent accuracy rate, from 2018, is the second-best in franchise history, behind Dave Ridgway’s 90.6 (1993). In 2018, Lauther was named the Roughriders’ Most Outstanding Canadian and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. In 2021, he won the latter award for the second time. On June 20, 2019 in Ottawa, Lauther kicked a career-long 57-yard field goal. He kicked another 57-yarder against the Montreal Alouettes on July 2, 2022 at Mosaic Stadium.

COLLEGE: Lauther played in 18 U Sports games for the Halifax-based Saint Mary Huskies. With Saint Mary’s, he made 33 of 47 field-goal attempts, scored 148 points, and punted 146 times for 5,534 yards. While at Saint Mary’s, he also spent two seasons (2010-11 and 2011-12) with the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League’s Brookfield Elks, He registered 11 goals and 14 assists in 20 games, counting regular-season and playoff competition. Early in the 2011 calendar year, he had 11 points over a stretch of five games, including a non-football three-pointer. Lauther still exhibits his hockey talents during the annual Roughrider Foundation Winter Classic charity event in Saskatoon. He has played a key role in organizing the event and, in addition, has captained the winning team in back-to-back years.
